It generally has to do with the female resisting the male's sexual advances. Perhaps the woman was newly married and thought she loved her husband. However, when she was captured by the seemingly evil lord-so-and-so, she began to have second thoughts. Most romance novels are thus propelled along by "the chase." The More the Better Of course, a beautiful woman, a handsome man, and lots of sexual tension are just a few of the many things an ideal romance novel should have.
